Ghost gums

with Kay Crowhurst

The cool sprawling
Ghost gums..
..in herds ... graze..
...in the slowest of motion...
..lumbering spirit shadows...
......ancient beasts ...
...anchored through that dry red dirt...
......smooth & fluid as Namatjira's hand...
....spectral skin fluorescent in the moonlight...
...watchful with their lightning licked limbs...
....seasons remembered in soils...
...rings akin..
... to muscle memory...
...drought, rains & salt...
...growth & grain...
...a record within...
..the ancient, silent songs
of the ghost gums....
...the herds hum....
...climbing the mountain...
..in the slowest of motion...
...rail roots running sand tracks...
...grown thick the old bark...
...the old rocks pass......
.........no hurry in the herd.
