We only wanted
The sun on our limbs
The light to play
Through the tiny veins
Of our leaves
We only wanted
To come in from the cold
Cracked, unattended panes
Amplifying the long
Afternoon radiance
We only wanted
To grow
And
Like you,
We sought
The opportune
Days of nothing,
No movement
But for the creatures
That ingest and turn
The earth
Did we know your floors
Would part for us
Your ceilings cave
Your finished timber tables
Turn toward the walls
All peeled of their paper
And echoes of the laughter?
No
We only wanted
To grow
